The ultimate island camping excursion!

Sail, swim and explore by day and camp by night on one of Maine's most celebrated and precious "gems," Jewell Island. The Schooner Glory takes you there and back and awaits nearby for an afternoon adventure sail each day you are there.

Rich in Both History and Legend

Many tales of Jewell Island have been told over the years of pirates (Captain Kidd), buried treasure, counterfeit salt businesses, liquor smuggling, and of course, lots of ghost stories. Picnickers have been visiting the island since the late 1800's. The Army acquired it during WWII and built a station there with two lookout towers and a gun battery. Visitors can climb up one of the towers for an incredible view of the island and the surrounding waters and islands. The gun battery (which was never fully completed) was built atop a massive concrete underground building, and there are many other abandoned cement structures to explore as well.

Camping on the island is all by tent. There are picnic tables, fire pits and outhouses - all overseen by a full-time, seasonal caretaker who maintains the trails and campsites, serves as an educational resource, and promotes a sustainable recreational ethic.

What Might a Typical Excursion Look Like?

Well, it wouldn't be "typical," that's for sure, seeing there is so much to see and experience on Jewell and with such a unique vessel as the Glory. But it might sorta look something like this:

Day 1

  • Set out early morning on the Schooner Glory from Downtown Portland
  • Anchor in Cocktail Cove and row parties and gear ashore to set up camp
  • Engage in whatever island-type activities you desire, whether it be hiking/exploring the island's trail system (website)swimming in the "Punchbowl" or just leisurely reading and/or contemplation
  • Head out for an afternoon 3-hour adventure sail aboard the Glory (weather permitting, of course)
  • Return to the island to prepare and enjoy dinner, catch a sunset, wind down and call it a day

Days 2, 3, etc.

  • Engage in whatever camping and/or island-type activities you prefer that day
  • Head out for an afternoon 3-hour adventure sail aboard the Glory (weather permitting, of course)
  • Return to the island to prepare and enjoy dinner, catch a sunset, wind down and call it a day

Departure Day

  • Break camp, row parties and gear back aboard the Glory and return to Portland

Of course, a successful island (or any) camping excursion involves quite a bit of pre-planning on the part of the campers. Capt. Duff is happy to help augment this planning process by taking the time to discuss logistics to and from the island and the daily afternoon sailing aspect. The rest is up to you.
